Laughlin History
|
 |
|
|
Laughlin is located in an area along the bank of the Colorado River, known as the tri-state area (Nevada, Arizona and California), which is in the Nevada State southern corner.
The tourist city, Laughlin, Nevada, started with a Las Vegas business man, Don Laughlin, who came here in 1964 and bought an eight room motel. Started by four motel rooms, he offered inexpensive food and gambling. Laughlin then is nothing but a river front place across river from a tiny town, Bullhead City, Arizona. The city is named after him by the U.S. Postal Service since his Don Laughlin's Riverside Casino is the primary business which needed postal services.
Slowly by steadily, Riverside Casino attracted more and more players from Bullhead City and other places nearby. Riverside Casino and Hotel grew to 56 rooms in 1972, 108 rooms in 1975, 361 rooms in 1983, 668 rooms in 1986 and 1404 rooms in 1994.
The second casino in Laughlin is the Bobcat Club which opened in 1967. The ownership changed several times and the hotel and casino is now called Golden Nugget Laughlin.
From late 70s to the 80s, business boomed in Laughlin. Several resort casinos opened. Here is a list
Colorado Club opened in 1979 and lately sold and renamed Pioneer Hotel and Gambling Hall.
Edgewater Hotel & Casino opened in 1981.
Gold River opened in 1984 and now it is called River Palms Resort Casino.
The Colorado Belle Hotel and Casino opened in 1987.
Tropicana Express Hotel & Casino opened in 1988.
Harrah's Laughlin Casino Hotel opened in 1988.
Flamingo Hilton Laughlin opened in 1990. It is sold and renamed to Aquarius Casino Resort in 2006.
The growing gaming industry in Laughlin has helped both Laughlin and Bullhead City's growth. Bullhead City has become the fastest growing community in Arizona. Population has grown from 10,000 in 1980 to 38,960 in 2006. Most Laughlin casino employees live in Bullhead City. Laughlin's population has grown from 95 in 1985 to 7,215 in 2007.
Now Laughlin has nine hotel/casinos and one motel with over 10,000 hotel rooms. It attracts about 5 million visitors annually around the world. Many tourists from California to the Grand Canyon will stop at Laughlin.
The Laughlin River Run is the West Coast's largest Harley-Davidson motorcycle event. It is on the last full weekend in April for 5 days. The 25th Annual Laughlin River Run is from April 25 to April 29, 2007. Free attractions include the Harley Davidson Traveling Museum, test rides on new Harley Davidson motorcycles, Miss Hawaiian Tropics competition, tattoo contests, live entertainment. Concerts include ZZ Top, The Fabulous Thunderbirds.
Each year, it attracts about 50,000 bikers. It is quite a phenomena for a city with only 8000 people.
